Luise is in her second semester of business administration in Hamburg and is currently completing a three-month internship in marketing at our Hamburg office.

She will tell you more about her experiences at avodaq so far and give you an insight into the internship.

Hello Luise! It’s great to have you here. Why don’t you tell us a few things about yourself?

I’m Luise, 20 years old, and I’m in my second semester of business administration at BSP Hamburg. As part of my studies, I’m currently doing my internship at avodaq in marketing. I had my first day on the 16th of January. In my free time I like to play golf and travel. I am open-minded and always excited to learn about new things.

Why did you decide to do an internship at avodaq?

For me, it was clear from the beginning that I wanted to do an internship in marketing. Beyond that, I didn’t have any specific ideas and approached the search with an open mind. What I found exciting about avodaq was the fact that the company is so future-oriented – even though I didn’t have any prior knowledge on IT topics. The main aspect for me was the personal interview. It was just such an easy going, good conversation.

"I immediately had the feeling that there was great interest from both sides in getting to know each other. I had the impression that they were actually looking forward to welcoming me."

And how did you experience your start with us?

The positive impression from the personal interview was definitely confirmed! I was welcomed with open arms. Everyone took their time to tell me about their tasks in marketing. There was a briefing plan for the first few weeks, which made the start very easy for me. At the “Welcome Day” two weeks later, I got to know all the other newcomers and learned a lot about the other departments.

Now you’ve been here for over a month. Could you please give us an insight into what your day-to-day work is like?

The days and tasks are totally diverse! After learning a lot about the different areas in marketing at the beginning, I can now dig in further. The nice thing is that everyone takes a lot of time for me and I can ask questions at any time. I feel involved and am also taking on more and more tasks and small projects of my own.  It’s great to be able to get a taste of everything – from event planning and employer branding to more analytical tasks like SEO analyses. My interests and knowledge are also considered and I can focus on certain areas.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

On the one hand, the variety in my job, which I’ve already mentioned. And on the other hand, I appreciate the positive atmosphere in the office. All the people enjoy going to the office here. And everyone is motivated in what they’re doing  – everyone has a positive mind. It’s very cool to be part of the whole.

What do your like most about being in the office?

I really appreciate the team spirit and enjoy talking to my colleagues in person. I also always look forward to lunch, because I meet new people almost every day. Every day is different and there is always something happening. When you’re in the office, you just get to see more of the way people interact with each other. Today, for example, Andreas (CEO of avodaq, editor’s note) turned up the music loudly during his lunch break and everyone was in a good mood. It’s also the little things, I would miss at home. Time goes super fast and I’m always excited for the next day.

We’re glad to hear that! Let’s get back to the internship… What expectations did you have beforehand and were they met?

If I’m honest, I didn’t expect much from my internship. It was important for me to experience the day-to-day work in marketing. Getting to know everything that goes with it – from the big projects to the small, maybe not so exciting things. I wanted to get a good overview. In this respect, my expectations were more than met. It very well could have been that I’d end up with nothing to do and just having to make coffee all day. Fortunately, that’s not the case at all. I’m discovering here how diverse an office job can really be. And it’s nice that everything happens at eye level.

Speaking of your expectations: What has been the biggest surprise so far?

Although I’m studying Business Administration, I didn’t realize how much marketing is the centerpiece of many aspects of the company. There are interfaces with all areas.

And how important it is to do something for the people working at the company! Like the intranet, for example – that’s really cool. Here you can find a lot of information from the departments for all the other colleagues. It really goes along way for the atmosphere within the company.

What will you take with you for the future?

That an office job doesn’t have to be boring at all. And the same goes for IT. I realized once again that the image of IT is changing – IT is the future and you can make so many positive things happen with it. And it’s great that you can use marketing to make complex IT topics lively, colorful and vivid. We take up innovative topics and make them approachable through marketing. And I’ve also realized how important the little things are. For example, a news article just for employees. That has a positive effect on overall employee motivation.

What did your friends and family say about your internship at an IT company?

They were a little skeptical at the beginning. But to be honest, so was I. I didn’t know exactly what to expect. But now everyone is super impressed – which I’m sure is also due to what I’m sharing.

Do you have any tips for future interns or those who want to become interns?

Be open, ask questions, get a taste of everything, take in everything that is offered to you. Set yourself challenges, but also be honest with yourself when something is overwhelming or doesn’t work out that way. Nobody bites you if you can’t do it.

Thank you Luise for the interview and your open and honest answers!
