For several years now, avodaq has been supporting SICK AG in modernizing its office landscapes and enhancing their flexibility. The cooperation is focused on the training center, the SICK Sensor Intelligence Academy (SIA), and the technical equipment for renovations and new buildings at the nearby headquarters. In both cases, Cisco systems and applications form the technical basis of the network. The video and media technology partner is the Berlin-based systems house PIK AG.
The campus of the SICK Sensor Intelligence Academy (SIA) is SICK AG’s global training and further education center for employees, partners, and customers. Covering a total area of around 7,700 m2, this modern building has been integrated in the extensive park of a historical listed castle.
SICK applies modern working methods, excellent room design and the latest communication technologies in this flagship project. The SIA Campus includes over 150 training workstations, a showroom for virtual and real product presentations, a light-flooded auditorium with around 160 seats for events, and 24 IT training rooms that can be flexibly arranged and combined. So the SICK Sensor Intelligence Academy forms a platform for exchange, “turning knowledge into ‘eureka!’ moments and ideas into innovations”.
„The SIA Campus is our technical benchmark for New Work, designed and equipped with the latest available media and network technology from Cisco. It supports all scenarios for internal and external customers from the ability to order food digitally to the room setup with presenter and speaker cams.“

Our close cooperation with SICK AG has led to the creation of a state-of-the-art, hybrid working environment for global education and training measures – an ideal place for technical training, management meetings, and co-creation. Cisco’s modern media technology and networking technology enable live broadcasts of workshops and training sessions to all SICK locations worldwide. And thanks to the ability to draw together on digital Webex boards, the feeling grows that, despite being many miles apart, everyone is sitting together in the same room.
“SICK is a company that manufactures and distributes high-quality technologies. Which is why we need a high-quality learning environment with excellent collaboration tools. Cisco Webex allows us to create a seamless connection between the physical and virtual worlds.”, said Nico Zimmermann, head of the SICK Sensor Intelligence Academy (SIA).
The Covid-19 pandemic sparked the desire at various SICK AG locations to redesign their office environments. One driver was the strong employee growth, which traditional office concepts could no longer efficiently absorb. Instead of relying on desk sharing, SICK went a step further directly to the ‘Flexible Office’.
Here, people can choose workstations in line with their own requirements and activities during the day: the traditional desk, a meeting room, a cubicle, the sofa corner or remote work. For employees, there are no seating plans and no need to book in advance, there are always free rooms and workstations available.
The pilot projects were launched together with avodaq in two existing buildings in need of renovation. Their substantive basis was formed by lessons learned from the previous SIA project and a targeted survey of employees requirements: who performs which activities with whom and where? The premises were specifically designed, adapted and optimized in workshops with the users and the department management.
„When it comes to implementing technology for the Flexible Office, we place the highest demands on quality. Our perception is that the avodaq engineers are way ahead in terms of technological development. As sparring partners, they give us valuable stimuli for our own continued development.“
Olaf Risse, IT Project Manager, Global IT SICK
„We create environments in which colleagues feel comfortable. Many of them come to the office deliberately because they can do some tasks better there than at home. Cisco Webex forms our technical basis, and we are very satisfied with it. This is also true of the cooperation with avodaq. Their experts enjoy the challenge and are motivated to get things implemented. This is an enormous help in our projects. “

SICK relies on a global standard for media and network technology: Cisco software and hardware. A high level of usability is essential, while users must be able to find their way around immediately in every meeting room worldwide. What’s more, technical standards are easier to manage and secure through internal IT. “We are doing everything possible to provide a uniform user interface and lower the barrier to entry,” reports André Lienhard, IT Service Owner Unified Communications in SICK IT. With standardized technology from a single source, the digital foundation can be laid for modern offices – flexible, efficient and future-proof.
